An Overview of all the games built on id Tech 4
The Games
Doom 3 - PC, XBOX
Doom 3 was the first game to be released on id Tech 4. The technology was so revolutionary at the time that went it was shown at E3 2002, organisers demanded to see the game being played as proof that it wasn't doctored, or a non-realtime demo. The use of Dynamic Shadows, High res GUI textures and unified lights and surfaces put the visuals into an entirely new league.
Upon it's release Doom 3 split critiques and fans alike. While many saw the game as little more than a glorified tech demo, others felt the atmosphere, pace and visuals made the game a classic.
Doom 3 : Ressurection of Evil - PC, XBOX
Resurrection of Evil is the expansion pack for Doom 3, and continues three years after the end of the first game. While primarily the same game, new features such as being able to slow down time added variety to the formula, though many saw it as a greatly inferior game. The game was also released on the Xbox.
Quake 4 - PC, X360
Quake 4 picked up where Quake 2 left off, continuing the story of Earth's Battle against the Strogg. More substantial use of detailed heightmaps gave many of the textures and characters in Quake 4 a little more fidelity than those in Doom 3, though the visual style's are largely similar.
Quake 4 was the first game built on id Tech 4 to be released on the Xbox 360, though the PC version is generally accepted as the superier title due to some texture compression and framerate issues on the console version.
Enemy Territory : Quake Wars - PC, X360 (un), PS3 (un)
Enemy Territory : Quake Wars is a prequel to Quake 2, and through multiplayer focussed gameplay tells of the initial Strogg invasion on Earth.
The game built upon the greatly successful class based system that develop studio Splash Damage had already implemented in their Multiplayer adaptation of Return to Castle Wolfenstein. Numerous enhancments on the game engine, such as the MegaTexture technology increased the quality and performance of the visuals massively, and the game has a large community following.
Prey - PC, X360
Prey, a game originally thought to be lost forever as vapourware was bought back to life on id Tech 4 by Humanhead Studios. Although the signature feel and style of the engine is as prominent in Prey as it is in other id Tech 4 games, the studio made many enhancments to really bring out the organic feel in the environment.
As with Quake 4, Prey was also released on the Xbox 360, though again the PC version was generally accepted as the superior of the two.
